A nostalgic trip in aesthetic, story and style presented in a sci-fi offering from Steven Spielberg (we have previewed it here) – and if we know something about Mr. Spielberg, it’s that he doesn’t do anything small in impact. Super 8, the latest release from the Hollywood guru is not an exception to the rule – read below for triplew.me’s review of Super 8…
The film follows a group of teenagers as they prepare to make a film on their Super 8 tape. The kids are eccentric and somewhat out-casted, with different back-stories - Those qualities which make them the perfect candidates for the journey ahead.
As a sci-fi film, Super 8 – naturally – is centralized around a super natural occurrence. This is not a spoiler, and you’ve probably all guessed it by now - it’s a film about aliens.
But in reality, the actual driving force behind Super 8 – is that it isn’t just a film about extraterrestrials. It is much more than that. We don’t even meet/see the creature for the most part of the film. We are driven to focus on the characters, their stories and self-discovery journeys (as teenagers, you bet there is a lot of ongoing conflict and resolution).
The cast is relatively unknown, but perfectly fit for their roles. The writing and directing (J. J. Abrams) are solid, eventhough it suffers from several moments of utter clichés – but in context, an 80’s inspired film is bound to have one or two of those!
Super 8 successfully blends elements of fantasy, adventure, thrill and just simple humanity to create a well-rounded cinematic escape for 151 minutes.
