A scene from Judd Apatow's Bridesmaids

Comedy is back with a vengeance this week! The new addition to the Judd Apatow comedy legacy is a “chick flick” with a twist. Read below for triplew.me’s review of Bridesmaids…

The first image that comes to mind when we hear the words “chick flick” is some form of clichéd drivel masked as a movie. Chick flicks are the kind of films that you watch when you’ve got nothing else to do (which includes finding out that your local quilting class is on an indefinite hiatus).

This bad reputation that surrounds the sub-genre (or hybrid-genre) comes from the almost-always poor writing, stereotype-perpetuating plots and over the top performances. But lo-and-behold, a self-proclaimed “chick flick” which cast comprises of six women (a round of applause for Hollywood, please?) turns out to be one of the best comedies of the year.

Bridesmaids doesn’t have an original story, it largely revolves around bad luck and events going wrong; but coupled with very strong writing (co-written by SNL comedian Kristen Wiig) and even more impressive performances from the film’s stars (Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne), this very ordinary story becomes a very hilarious story.

You can probably figure out what the film is about from the title. Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is getting married and as tradition dictates she assembles a group of bridesmaids to help her during the build-up to the wedding. This random group of ladies turns out to be both supportive and (funnily) destructive – but mainly, the story revolves around the maid of honor, Annie (Kirsten Wiig).

The plot takes a challenging turn when Annie’s friendship with Lillian gets the verge of dissolving which also coincides with her faltering professional and personal life. So will everything turn out okay for our very funny lady? You have to watch and see!

The film is directed by Paul Feig, who made his name on TV and created the Judd Apatow-produced Freaks and Geeks.

A hilarious ensemble film of the 'chick flick' type. Powered by a strong cast and top-notch writing (and perfect comedic timing!) - Bridesmaids is a must watch.
