Missdavinalee Gig Review

Missdavinalee

It may come as a surprise, but triplew.me has a London outpost (as well Australia, New York and the Middle East), and sometimes we get invited to some pretty cool gigs. In this article, Will Nixon, checks out one of the hottest new things from London, missdavinalee.

Any band that plays a tune with two synths instead of a bass-player gets my vote. With their first single ‘Come On!’ coming out on the 20th September, missdavinalee opened their UK tour with an impressive set at The Monarch in Camden on Wednesday night, giving the respectable crowd a taste of their energetic brand of indie-pop.

Guitar-playing front-woman Davina Lee Cooke’s brilliant Karen-O-esque voice was at the forefront, backed up by smooth bass lines and guitar riffs that were impossible to resist tapping my feet to. Highlights of the set included a prolonged funky percussion break utilising two percussionists in addition to the drums, the aforementioned synth-pop number where the bass guitar was dropped in favor of a bottom end synth-groove, and the set-closing rendition of the single ‘Come On!’.

According to Infadels DJs’ Richie Vernon, “With pop hooks large enough to land Moby Dick, if missdavinalee's shimmering anthems are not filling the main stages next year I'll eat my cardigan”. A brave wager - but based on Wednesday’s show, if missdavinalee play their cards right and continue to channel the energy of “Come On!” and their more vivacious numbers, Vernon’s cardie might just avoid becoming a meal.

missdavinalee's debut single ‘Come On!’ will be released on Helix Records on 20th September, and available on iTunes and Amazon via http://www.missdavinalee.com/comeon. In the meantime, check them out at www.myspace.com/missdavinalee.
