Feeler: Pete Murray Q&A

Pete Murray just released his new album - Blue Sky Blue

We met up last week with Australian singer/songwriter Pete Murray ahead of his Sandance gig in Dubai. Read below to find out more about his new album and his unusual music career….

New Album…

Murray recently released his 4th album “Blue Sky Blue” – which presents a shift in sound for the singer/songwriter. “Back in Australia I’m very well known for an acoustic sound, and on this album I wanted to get away from that.  So this album (Blue Sky Blue) is more electric and has a lot of groove behind a lot of the songs.” says Murray.

On starting his music career…

Pete Murray’s career didn’t launch until 2003, and he didn’t pick up the guitar until he was 22 years old. Prior to that, he didn’t even think that he was going to become a musician “A friend of mine told me he was going to learn the guitar (one day) and funnily enough the idea stuck with me, so I started getting lessons (and he didn’t!). It was a very challenging thing to do, especially with no music background. From there I started playing random gig around Brisbane which led me to finally record my first album [The Game - an independent demo album]”

The Story of Success…

Murray hit the limelight with his 2003 album Feeler, which was a massive hit in Australia “I think people responded to me ‘cause I had a fresh sound and they probably connected with my lyrics. I’m very aware of making my lyrics relatable.”

A Word of Advice…

What would Pete Murray tell up and coming musicians and artists who are looking for a break?

“I used to be an athlete [rugby union] before I was a musician – and even back then I’ve always had the focus on doing what makes me happy. With music, I had to find that passion and when I did it was great. So my advice is, if you are passionate about your craft do it for the right reasons; not for the money or the fame."

Murray adds "and the biggest thing I’ve learnt was; persistence, persistence and persistence! Go after what you want and make yourself memorable, that’s important as well.”

It seems that after going 11x Platinum with his albums in Australia, Murray's persistence is continuing to pay off as he tours the world and gets international releases all over the planet.
