New Album from Death Cab for Cutie

It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than thirteen years since the formation of Death Cab for Cutie – and with the release of their seventh studio album “Codes and Keys”, the band is changing it up once again. Recorded over a period of seven months across different studios in the West Coast (of the US) – the band has taken a completely different and much more constructed approach – as Chris Walla (guitarist/producer/pianist) puts it “We've deconstructed little pieces of songs before like this. But, we've never pulled the thread out of the whole sweater and then made a new sweater out of it. Not like this.” Walla adds that he was pleased that his band mates “were all willing to let me lead them down the rabbit hole on a lot of different songs.

The album explores different textures, sound compositions and styles – with songs ranging from dark and gloomy to poppy, flamboyant and vaudeville-ish . Drummer Jason McGerr says “With all the songs that Ben wrote, he really experimented a lot with his songwriting, he started to use his voice more as an instrument than just somebody singing lyrics.” – This experimental approach has added an extra layer of imagery to the tracks which, according to Walla, creates an amazing experience for the listener “I've been learning that there's a way to present a song and a way to move somebody with a landscape they haven't necessarily seen or heard before. I really wanted to try to do that. I wanted to try and make a new visual for the cinema of song.”

Despite the deconstructed and separated recording sessions – Codes and Keys remains a cohesive unit, largely due to the vision of producer Chris Walla - “I was really interested in making a record rather than a recording,” Walla says. “And particularly when it came to vocal treatments and drawing big, heavy dark lines between verses and choruses and doing that sort of thing, I asked him (Alan Moulder, Codes and Keys mixer) to be pretty brave and pretty bold with all of that stuff.”
