Legend (well, fact) has it, Dave Grohl went a made a recording of demos he’d recorded during touring with Nirvana, and created the Foo Fighters. Since then, the band has gone on to sell millions of albums and win countless awards. This week a DVD documentary of the “Fooies” is released...
Dave Grohl has been at the centre of the rock universe for almost 25 years. In Nirvana, he was one-third of one of the most influential bands of all time, as the Foo Fighters he’s been the leader of a stadium rock mainstay act, in Them Crooked Vultures he’s a co-conspirator with two other legends.
Being so prolific used to be a recipe for potential failure as dilution of the music takes the edge away and insipid albums get delivered, but in recent times artists like Grohl and Jack White have proved that creativity isn’t necessarily stifled by being prolific.
A new documentary is released this week that looks at Grohl’s centrepiece band, the Foo Fighters. From the beginnings of their great (and in this humble writer’s opinion best) self-titled debut, to the multi-platinum follow up The Colour and The Shape and on to the 5 follow up albums (marked by the #1 Wasting Light produced with Nirvana producer Butch Vig) this is a band with longevity.
As fascinating as the band’s continued recipe for success is, and Grohl’s obvious talent, is how a band can stay together over 16+ years without succumbing to the normal pressures of music, and also seemingly staying sane, and that’s what promises to be a highlight of Back and Forth.
